A moment of thesis-related poignancy from Cate Blanchett:
“Why do so many people seek stardom as its own end? I have a theory about the obsession with celebrity that seems to have consumed so much of our world: Don’t you think it’s just people trying to connect to something? It’s just a bit of sadness, really, an odd perversion of intimacy.”
And if you pass a newsstand, check her out in John Galliano’s Dior Haute Couture. The dress is an amazing cross between regal England and Japanese samurai: silver embroidery on form-fitted black. Blanchett’s wearing a (now picture this) a glass pearl seahorse crown and armor armpiece. It’s on page 319.
Funny note: apparently Rainbow brand flipflops are all the rage in NYC (called Rainbow “thongs” in Laguna Beach, where they are du rigueur). Also, two interesting articles towards the back on Japanese architect Kazuyo Seijima and Secretary of State Condaleeza Rice.
And last time I read a Vogue, I mentioned Wangechi Mutu – now MoMA is advertising a cool symposium in January on eflux with images of her work. It’s called The Feminist Future: Theory and Practice in the Visual Arts on Friday, January 26, and Saturday, January 27, 2007 in NYC. Now that might have to be my own reward to myself for finishing the thesis. The speakers include lots of women I have read, including Anne Wagner, Lucy Lippard, Connie Butler (I did two terms of independent study with her), Linda Nochlin, and even Griselda Pollack, among many others. Wangechi Mutu is also a panalist.
