I rummaged through my old thesis word files today and found that dang list of questions I once tried to get Cardiff/Miller to answer. In retrospect, some of the questions seem silly – and others are still very pertinent. Here they are without any revisions:
Questions for Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller
July 2005
1. What was the first version of Intimacies done at the Banff Centre? What was the premise? In what ways was it the same or different from the second performance of Intimacies done at The New Gallery? Why was it repeated?
2. How did you define intimacy at that time? Has that definition changed?
3. Would you describe (George Bures Miller’s) Conversation/Interrogation? In what way was it a precursor to the audio Walks?
4. Would you describe Forest Walk (1991)? How is it the same or different from later Walks, such as The Missing Voice (1999)?
5. Why did you wait until 1996 to make another audio Walk? Was it Bruce Ferguson’s idea specifically to do a Walk for the Louisiana Museum?
6. Have you made any other Walks that were not first commissioned?
7. How was the decision made to keep The Missing Voice running (or Her Long Black Hair) indefinitely? How is the popularity of a Walk measured?
8. Has The Paradise Institute been the most widely exhibited of your works? (or perhaps Forty-Part Motet?)
9. Why was the doctor’s voice directing the viewer at the end, edited out of The Paradise Institute?
10. Does The Paradise Institute seat 15, 16 or 17 people?
11. I would love to hear Forty-Part Motet – any U.S. or Canada dates lined up? Will it be in Europe again next summer?
12. Bures Miller or Miller? I see that at your collaborative show last year at Luhring Augustine you were always addressed as Miller, but previously it was Bures Miller. Please let know what you prefer.
